Ashgate installs first Fastbind Pureva Smart binder at Page Visions

Page Visions, a commercial printer in Slough has installed the UK’s first Fastbind Pureva Smart binder which complements the Fastbind Casematic A46Z Smartcasemaker and the Fastbind EVA XT hot melt binder which they recently bought from Ashgate.

“The Fastbind equipment suits us perfectly because it is so easy to use and produces a quality product every time. This is very important because we have a large finishing department with15 people in two shifts, operating all the Fastbind machines,” explained Iwona Wytrzymala, Finishing Manager. “Whenever they bring out something new where we can see the benefits of faster, easier and more consistent production, we always look at it first. We’ve known Ashgate and appreciated their service for so long. In the last seven years we have bought seven machines from them, including casemakers, binders, gluing equipment and laminators, all of which are still operational. Sometimes we are so busy that we have to bring one of our older pieces of Fastbind equipment out of store and it works every time”

Page Visions has a business to business and an online department where customers can order over the web. “During the lockdown, more and more customers placed their orders over the web and are still doing so. If they place their orders in the morning then we commit to finishing them the same day which can be quite a challenge,” said Iwona. “In my department we finish a wide range of hard and soft back books, photo albums, school books etc. from one to whatever the customer wants but the cut off is usually about a hundred.” They are printed on digital and posterpresses from Canon, Vario Print and HP for large format.

The Pureva Smart semi automated binder is the natural succession to the Fastbind PUREVA XT manual binder. Both machines are the only models on the market which can bind both soft and hard back books up to A3 portrait with the choice of PUR or EVA glue adhesive applications. Page produce books in A5 and A4, portrait and landscape format. “Due to the speed at which we have to turn the books round, we are using EVA glue because it is quicker to dry and finish. However, it is useful to have a machine that can do both. In future it gives us the opportunity to take on much longer runs where we have more time to use the PUR glue,” Iwona commented.

This fully equipped, ergonomic workstation is compact, silent, clean and safe. The binding process is simplified by a clever use of automation. The operator inputs the parameters for the book with predefined programmes like the type of cover, type of paper and format, via the user interface on the seven inch digital touch screen. With this information the machine self-adjusts to create the best possible binding. The operator controls all the critical steps to make a quality book.
Roughening, gluing and nipping functions are automated for precision and consistency. It calculates automatically the optimal pressure by adjusting the rail height, speed and number of cycles for roughening and gluing steps as well as the nipping time for each book according to format, thickness and cover type. Thanks to its electronic temperature control, it can use different types of bookbinding hot melt glues. Its auto cleaning system makes quick work of cleaning or changing tanks. To safeguard the operator, a light curtain acts as a presence detection device and immediately stops the on-going operation as soon as any possible danger is detected.

It works well in conjunction with the Casematic A46, Fastbind’s first semi-automated cover maker. Page use it for A5 and A4 portrait and landscape covers. “It’s faster and more consistent than the manual casemaker,” said Iwona. The automation makes the operator’s work more accurate and covers and cases can be produced quickly with no set up time. While staying in control all the time. There are not stops between jobs or production bottlenecks.
A vacuum maintains the sheet in place. Then the guides are automatically lifted and the air table assist moves the cover around. The folding unit uses a mechanical clamp to turn the edges, helping the finishing department to move the book onto the next stage.

“We work well with Ashgate. They are friendly and helpful. In many cases they can sort out our queries over the phone but if we do need them to come out, they are very quick to respond, which is essential in a busy finishing department like ours,” Iwona concluded.
