Printing Labels - Profit on a roll

Your regular QPP NPC pages remit is to find new profit in print, so while we are on a roll, how do you supply your customers with labels?

Back in the 80s when we started our own Canon colour copy centre we use the sheet label product from the Canon Copystock range. 33 years on, Colourfast is still printing on label sheets or using trade suppliers for labels on rolls and specialised finishes for example foil.

Trade suppliers will take a few days to a week and generally have a minimum run. I am not knocking this as it keeps our customers happy, and in that keeps our customers for all our other printed in-house products.
For this test we are examining bringing some of these label jobs into our own production and finding new customers for fast same day short run labels.
Enter the Epson ColorWorks C7500.

Installed straight out of the box, software was simple to load and we were up and running in a matter of minutes.
This desktop printer is producing high speed and high quality labels on demand in a choice of sizes and stocks.
The vinyl smudge and wet proof labels are already for sale in a short run proposition to fill the gap between sheet fed and outsourcing.
So how quickly will you expect to bank your ROI?

Our RSP’s are positioned to sell fast short run labels that to date aren’t really available. The kit street price is circa £5K, or around £120 per month when lease renting on a 20 quarterly profile.
Over the summer we will be road testing the profit opportunity and reporting back to you. On first sight it looks like one job a week to cover investment and more beer tokens from there on in.

We will be using an online simulator consumable measuring tool to price the ink usage of the three samples shown here. The one with the background is practically worst case scenario so will be written into our bought ledger to discover the net profit. Forecast about five pence per label to include ink and media.
